Picked a bad week to quit sniffing glue

Hi, Internets!

pause.

Okay, let’s try that again: Hi, internets!

That’s better. Okay then. I’m sure you’re wondering just what will I blather about today. You know you wanna know, and it probably kept you up half the night. Me too! So here it is:

I’m trying to cut back on my caffeine.

There, that’s it. Oh, and I gave up ice cream for lent. Can you tell?

strikes a pose

Okay, probably not. The lack of ice cream has been more than made up for with things like fried chicken fingers and cookies. But still, I’m quite proud of myself that I have not bought a single pint of Ben & Jerry’s since Fat Tuesday (see? How I was inspired?) nor have I scarfed on any of the Klondike Bars in our freezer (you can buy a box of 30 of them and damn they last a long time when I’m not eating them).

So the ice cream thing was going so well that I thought I could try a similar trick with coffee. Not cold turkey (oh, HALE NO) but cut back. I was inspired on Saturday (April Fools Day) when I was giving blood and they said my blood pressure was a little high. “Nothing to worry about, just a little high, now open a vein and bleed for me, biatch.” The thing is, they’ve said that the last seventeen times I’ve given blood. And I always chuckle and say “well, I’ve had a lot of coffee today” and that’s that.

I really have no idea how much coffee I drank every day. I’m pretty sure it’s in the double digits (cups-wise). I start when I get to work and drink (coffee) pretty much all day until I go home in the evening, and then sometimes grab a cup after dinner if we are eating at a fancy place that still serves coffee after dinner. I don’t drink much sugar-water (sorry, “high fructose corn syrup water, aka cokes”) so that isn’t a factor.

I started on Sunday, with the time change (yes, I am a machosist. And I totally had to look up how to spell it. Check out Wikipedia, they have a pretty cool bit on all that). So each day I am shooting for two cups of coffee but no more than three or four.

Damn, how precise of you!

Hey, this is my deal and I can bend the rules if I want. In the past when I’ve tried to limit caffeine intake, I’ve had the pleasure of extreme headaches. So if I’ve had my two cups, I allow myself a third in the afternoon to stop a headache. This is still much much better than I was doing before, where I’d have three cups an hour just about all day long.

Also, I have a favorite coffee shop that is just around the corner from work. (‘Around the corner’ in these parts means only a few minutes in the car) They have lovely coffees from various exotic sounding countries (I had ‘Costa Rican’ the other day, just to be cool) and it’s like $1.50, but the cup is bigger than my standard cup here at work. So it’s hard to interchange – if I get “a cup” there, then do I count it as two cups? It’s really like one and a half. Also, you get fifty cents off if you get a refill, so some days I’ve been saving my cup and going back in the afternoon (see all my entries about sick children) and then I’ve got something like three or four cups total for the day.

Still, better than what was happening. Let’s sum up: no ice cream, and less coffee. It won’t take much to make me happy right now…

So, I’ll end all this blathering with a link to a model at India fashion week and say that I would totally support you if you wanted to wear that to a hockey game.
