Survey says!

Yeah, use your best Richard Dawson voice for that. (if you don’t know who Richard is, go ask your parents, they might be my age)

Ahem.

I’m loving this little article, which of course will be plastered everywhere in the finest holiday tradition:

“The reality of the situation is that most people had premarital sex, and it’s been that way for several decades,” says Lawrence Finer, director of domestic research at the Guttmacher Institute, a New York City-based non-profit organization that studies reproductive and sexual health.

The study, which used statistics from the 1982, 1988, 1995 and 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, asked about 40,000 people ages 15-44 about their sexual behavior and traced the trends in premarital sex back to the 1950s.

Of those interviewed in 2002, 95% reported they had had premarital sex; 93% said they did so by age 30. Among women born in the 1940s, nearly nine in 10 did. At the same time, people are waiting longer to marry; 2005 data show median age at first marriage is just over 25 for women and 27 for men….

I’ve linked to the USA Today article about this study, but there were over 200 to pick from when I googled it this morning.

So… have any of you, dearest readers, ever engaged in such frivolity?

I’ll go first. I’ll proudly stand up and say yes, I had sex before I was married. Lots of times. And I enjoyed the hell out of it. Then, she and I were married, and continued having sex, and then we had a rough spot (sex? not so much), and now we’re back to having lots of sex again.

And our twentieth anniversary is coming up.

Now, your turn… :p

  1. Not married, and never have been. Am having sex thoug. Lots! Sometimes with more than one partner at the same time. Is that enough?

  2. Hell yeah! However, it’s nearly as chaste as premarital sex can be since he was my first and only partner, and now my husband.

But if the question is just premarital, yes or no? Then yes. Seriously, I don’t know many people over the age of 17 that can wait. Yes, I was 17 too. Is that late? Early? I don’t even know.

  3. Yes. The only people I know who didn’t have premarital sex were those who got married between the ages of 18 and 20…and now that I think about it, most of them had already done the deed, as well.

  4. yes. yes indeed.

a few times before Kev entered my life, and then LOTS after he did. I regret nothing. It was nothing but fun! I don’t think my soul has been irreparably damaged because I wasn’t a virgin on my wedding night!

  5. I think that in general, people determined to wait either 1) marry as toddlers or 2) have a seriously screwed-up attitude towards physical intimacy which may never be worked through even after marriage.

I did not wait, so the above doesn’t apply to me. 😉 My ex, however… well, how much time do you have…?

  6. Yeah, I did it. Quite a few times. And I liked it! And I still do! And I’m pretty sure my great-grandmother suspected that her mom and dad did the deed before they were married…so that they could get married! Big family drama!

  7. Wow, so one way to get comments is to mention sex. Got it.

😮 – I’ve decided to name this smilie ‘Lewinsky’

Anyway, my wife assures me that her parents never had sex before marriage. I’m trying not to picture her mom having sex, like ever, but I guess she had to or I wouldn’t be married to her daughter.
