30 years ago they were “Where America Shops.”

Does anyone shop at Sears anymore?

I ask only because we went tonight, and it was pretty sad – a shell of what I remember Sears being in days past.

Employees were scarce. Almost as scarce as customers.

I found one fitting room in the entire store, monitored by closed ciruit TV’s at the door and a hundred signs that screamed things just short of “You’re a thief, we’re gonna catch you.”

I didn’t see anything in the place that was full price.

Displays were cluttered, clothes were lying all over the place, the whole store felt slightly dirty.

But hey, I found a swimsuit, and it was on sale (of course, everything is), and I finally found an employee to ring it up at the cash register, and he only half-heartedly tried to get me to sign up for a Sears card; he wanted to get back over to the electronics section where Monster House was playing. The whole thing reminded me of K-mart just before they closed here.

  1. Sears certainly does have quite a story. At one point, they sold houses (shipped!). I hate Sears. I used to be a Craftsman kid and loved anything Craftsman. But the Sears credit department is so unethically that I never want to set foot in a Sears again. I probably will. But reluctantly.

Didn’t Sears buy Kmart? Now that irony!
