old friends

“Dude, you look like you just lost your best friend!” I couldn’t believe the sadness in his eyes.

He didn’t answer me.

“What’s up?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. He looked like he was on the verge of tears. Then he told me of his buddy, and how he woke up one day and realized how far apart they had become. After years of being best friends, they were now almost passing acquaintances.

“But y’all used to do everything together,” I said (Yes, sometimes Texans talk like this. Shut UP) “What happened?”

“Well, now we’re too busy. There’s kids, jobs, family stuff. Reality TV to watch. Diets to screw up. There just doesn’t seem to be time anymore.”

“Well, what are you going to do?” I resisted the urge to tease him about watching reality TV.

“I haven’t figured that out yet. Every time I want to talk, we just.. can’t. Something always happens.”

“Dude, you need to do something about this. Seriously. Y’all have known each other forever, you can’t just drift apart like that!”

My son walks in. “Can I look in the mirror, too, Daddy?”
