Standing for America

After September 11, 2001, everyone around was wondering “What can we do to help?”

A few students at Texas A&M Decided to sell shirts and donate the profits to victims of the WTC. If you’ve ever been to an Aggie game at Kyle Field or seen one on TV, you know the stadium has three decks. It also holds nearly 80,000 people. And about half of them (all of the students, for sure) stand during the entire game to honor their football team and school.

It was decided to sell shirts in red, white, and blue; you purchased the shirt that corresponded with where your were going to sit for the football game. Of course, even if you weren’t going to the game, you could buy a shirt to help the cause (we spent a couple hundred dollars, easily).

On September 22, at home against Oklahoma State, was the first and so far only Red White and Blue Out. Here’s what it looked like:

Update: Here’s another story about that day with more pictures. What’s hard to grasp is this game took place 11 days post 9/11, and these five students not only conceived of the plan but designed, had printed, and sold 70,000 shirts in that time. You stood in line to order certain sizes and then when they printed (in batches, there is a local t-shirt company that does all kinds of printing) they sent word out where you could go to pick them up. Most of it happened at a park just off campus so there was enough room for the thousands of people standing in line, happily waiting for their chance to buy a shirt. They ran out of shirts before the game and some people drove more in from Dallas. They continued to sell shirts (and posters of the pictures) after the fact to continue raising money.
