Mir discusses her inner geek in this post, which reminded me of an episode over the weekend.
To get ready for Poppa’s memorial service, we decided to have some old photos enlarged and framed. By “we” of course I mean my wife and “old photos” means that some of them date back before there was actual film, they are more like artist interpretations. Anyway, we head out to do this, and of course we go to Wal-Mart and mess around for 45 minutes before we decide their machines are sucky. Then we go to Walgreens. Why? It’s across the street, and they do digital stuff, but their pictures don’t look any better than the ones at Wal-Mart.
Oh, yeah, I was talking about geekness. Sorry.
We’re standing at Walgreens and I have the brilliant idea of trying Wolf Camera, since they are kinda a camera store instead of a Discount City or Drugstore. (for the record, I actually had this idea when we left the house, heh) So we ask the Helpful Clerk at Walgreens for a phonebook so we can find Wolf Camera. No luck (it’s not listed).
(here’s the geek part):
Instead of paying $1.49 on our cell phone to call directory assistance, we use the cell phone to call my in-laws house (free in state roaming) to talk to someone else on their cell phone (who had free nationwide roaming) and have them boot up the laptop sitting on the kitchen counter (on the wireless network) and have them Google Wolf Camera for us.
It was a great plan except the network was down (ISP trouble with their DNS in Louisiana). We found Wolf the old fashioned way – by driving to where I thought it was – and found they had closed an hour before.
Too bad we didn’t go there first.
