Update: I have started another page (this one covers my first three months)
It’s not a secret - I’m fat.
Not fluffy, not plump, but according to the medical jargon “scary obese.”
I began walking at the beginning of the year, some. Â In April I began cutting back my coffee consumption. Â For lent I gave up Ben and Jerry’s. Â I joined Ediets at the beginning of May. Â When I signed up I put down 290 pounds, at my 1 week weigh in I weighed 284.
I’m pretty sure that 290 was a little much, but our scale sucks so I’m leaving it there. Â I think I’ve only lost a pound or so in the last week and a half.
Here, I will update my progress.
May 12: Amazon is shipping us a new (and digital) scale. Â I shouldn’t be so excited about this. Â Perhaps a life is needed?
May 13: 284.6. Â The new scale arrived.
May 13 1/2: Â 279.2. Â I got nekkid.
May 18:  279.4  Dunno what’s going on.  I’ve been sick and not physically active.
May 24: 276.0 Â Weekly weigh-in. Â Hope it’s right!
May 25: purchased a heart rate monitor. Â Gah.
May 29: 275.0 Â Not my weekly weigh in (only Monday) but whateva.
I’ve added a page talking about my Suunto heart rate monitor.
May 31: I’ve officially been on my ediet for a month. Â It has officially been two months since I began limiting coffee intake. Â And this morning I weighed myself at 272.4 - just over 17 pounds lost. Â I have gone for a walk/run for the past three nights and have been swimming or cycling just about daily for the past two weeks (but not intensely, just having fun). Â I’m probably going to stop updating my weight here quite so often, because this list is getting a little ridiculous. Â Once a week should suffice, right?
June 3: 271.6 this morning. Â I ran last night (at midnite, after seeing Xmen with the kids), but tonite I’m taking off since I donated blood today.
June 8: Â 270.4 today. Â Only significant change I’ve made this week is I decided that running every day was gong to fry my legs (knees don’t like pounding with 1/8 ton of human on top) so I’m switching to a slightly different program where I run three or four days a week and then on my days off I walk, bike, swim, do something less impacting on the legs. Â So yesterday (the 7th) I took the day off other than normal housework. Â This is not a break from my eating plan (that’s every day) so I don’t know what will happen with weight loss. Â I’d love to drop below 270, I’d also LOVE to drop another ten pounds by vacation (three weeks from tomorrow) but that may be pushing it.
Thanks, everyone, for the wonderful support via comments and e-mail. Â It means a ton. Â Nobody but you and my wife know what I’m doing. Â It can be our little secret, m’kay?
June 12: 271.8 Â That’ll teach me to spout off about how good I’m doing. Â Yes, (for anyone math impaired, like me) I’m up almost 2 pounds. Â The good news is that Sunday (the 11th) it was over three pounds. Â So I’m hoping this is a water retention thing or something and I’ll be back on track in a few days. Â But this is all about honesty, and that means the bad with the good, and I’ll admit to having had some potato chips over the weekend.
June 14: 268.2  Finally under 270!  BMI now 36.48.  Goal: 26.0 or less.
June 21: 266.2
Oops. Â Went to On the Fucking Border last night, and I’m over two pounds up today (June 23). Â But dayum that was a good margarita…
June 24: it has been a rough week for the bathroom scale.
day          weight  average  change
06/17/06 267.2 268.24 -0.6
06/18/06 267.4 267.76 0.2
06/19/06 267.6 267.64 0.2
06/20/06 266.4 267.28 -1.2
06/21/06 266.2 266.96 -0.2
06/22/06 265.8 266.68 -0.4
06/23/06 268 266.8 2.2
06/24/06 269.8 267.24 1.8
so I lost almost two pounds then gained four pounds. Â Heh.
More:
date        weight  avg        change
06/25/06 270.8 Â Â 268.12 Â Â Â 1
06/26/06 267.2 Â Â 268.32 Â Â -3.6
06/27/06 265.8 Â Â 268.32 Â Â -1.4
Finally, going down.
6/27 - back down to 265.8 this morning, my weight jumped last weekend and then dropped the last two mornings. Â Go figure.
6/28 - 265.6
7/12 - 263.4 (slow going, eh?)
7/18 - Jumping the gun here, official weigh-in isn’t until tomorrow. However: 260.0 Woot!
7/28 - yeah, I haven’t updated in a bit. At my Wednesday weigh in I was 260, but this morning (friday) i’m at 257.5. I don’t really think I’ve lost over two pounds in just two days, I think it’s a quirk of the scale. But whatever.
For anyone who is curious, here’s a link to my running log at Cool Running. For now I’m recording all my time on the street (walking and running) which is part of why I seem so slow. But as I’ve progressed I spend much more time running and less walking.
I missed my 25 minute run yesterday, so I’m going to try tonite after work. I hate to miss too many days since it screws up the schedule. Next week I’m supposed to have three 28 minute runs, I think.
This page is getting pretty long, should I break it up?
Update (yeah, still on 07/2
: ran 25 minutes tonite. Without walking. Dayum, I didn’t think it would be so hard, but after an extra rest day due to illness, and not eating or sleeping well due to same, I guess I should be glad I made it. It was more a mental effort than physical - my legs didn’t HURT so much as just want to stop running. Does that make sense?
Update: I have started a new page (this one covers my first three months, the new one picks the story up from there)

I think of a pound as a necklace with four sticks of butter attached. That’s one pound of fat - and you lost it. Woo-hoo!!

I have a theory that every pound someone loses, another person finds.
I think I’ve found about 10 other people’s pounds…

Kym,
I’m doing Ediets, and chose the “Mediterranean plan”, but I don’t really follow their meals - I just use them as a guide. at this point I have so much weight to lose that I just need to get moving.
I’ve cut out: fast food, ice cream, late night snacks (except the odd piece of fruit or cheese), soft drinks (don’t like diet ones anyway), fried stuff. The nutrition calculator at Ediets is great for telling you just what is in the recipe you are eating, and I’ve found many restaurants will give you nutrition information. Turns out my favorite salad at On the Border is 1,400 calories. Whoops!
Thanks, everyone, for the wonderful comments!

good job on the weigh-in. And BTW, I love the new look on the page. But when you click on comments on the front page, you get the Archives. Or at least I do. It may be (l)user error.

Ben
Heh. Not user error, I’ve munged something in the files. I’ll see what I can do (it was working fine, I swear!)
Thanks for the heads up…

Okay, I don’t think it’s the skin. I changed to another theme and have the same error. So it’s in the entry database.
Yay.

I am about 160 I think. I don’t own a scale, and wont own one. I really don’t mind the size but worry about my health. So I started walking recently, three times a week, about a mile and a half each time.
Why is it all so damn hard?

Oh, I forgot to leave my real comments, I went all “all about me” on ya!
Thats awesome, stick with the walking, it is so good for you.

I use this site: http://www.weendure.com/ to track my running progress. It is a social networking kind of site. Is this some thing that would be helpful for you too?

My husband wanted to take up running and the sales person at the running store warned him that it’s a hard exercise for tall overweight people. There’s a good reason why most runners are skinny short to average sized dudes.
Plus there’s some figure out there that for every 10 pounds overweight you are, that’s like an extra 20 pounds of pressure on your knees (not those exact numbers but you get the idea). So pretty much, I agree with what you think, take up some other forms of exercise so that running doesn’t burn you out.

That’s Great! I started taken my weight a little bit more serious this week. I don’t know if I lost anything, but I am eating healthier & cutting back on my Pepsi intake. I also have started baby exercises. I still need to break out the old “Biggest Loser” dvd, Mom my got me for Christmas (Because she loves me sooo much!) & start using it.

Ben, you’ve made AWESOME progress! I just recently (2 days ago) dusted off my FitDay software and starting to keep track there.
Keep up the good work, avoid Ben & Jerry like the plague (somehow, I keep bumping into those two) and you’ll do fine!

Wow! Congrats on your weight loss so far! I tried to sign up at ediets but none of those sites will work with nursing or pregnant women. Like it’s rocket science to add a few hundred calories! *hmmph!* I’m trying Sparkle People, which didn’t ask if I was nursing. So far all it has done is annoy me with emails.

Congratulations on your great weightloss!
