Trivia: 544 was the number on a farm to market road (FM) that ran through the town where I grew up. It was such a landmark you gave directions that way: “Turn off 544 at…” or “It’s by the gas station on 544.” I doubt they still do this since it’s not a small town any longer.

Where I live now we give stores as landmarks when trying to give directions. I heard a radio ad for a mattress store and they said “across from Spec’s” (liquor store) because nobody knows how to find a mattress but apparently we should all know where to buy booze. (Ahem.) Once upon a time a Taco Bell billboard was also a landmark, because it was a picture of a giant taco and so in TV ads a restaurant could say “under the big taco,” and we all knew where it was.
