So, looking for a summer camp for my boys.
Get them some fun experiences, outside, fun stuff. A break from mom and dad. Good times.
Looking at one web site, they had a slide show with all their Happy Campers. 15 slides, of white kids. Nothing but white kids.
I have no problems with white kids, I was one myself. I wonder how my son would feel? Would he be comfortable there?
Maybe I’ll look some more (there are 400 summer camps around here to choose from, maybe more)
Urgh. That sucks. Send them over here — they can join my kids in discussions about things like “How come there are hardly any white kids at school but all of the people who are professors at the university are white?”
We can take turns banging our heads on the wall and saying, “Ooooh, look! Something shiny! OVER THERE!”
I’m way too excited that a decent Asia/India population seems to be moving here to our part of Indiana (sometimes called Whitey McWhite-ville). That was one of the things I hated giving up when we left Maryland, the kids’ school there was so diverse. But I think the MD schools rubbed off a bit on my kids because they totally made friends with the minorities here really quickly. Yeah, skin color shouldn’t matter but I hope my kids have learned to appreciate nationalities and how cool it can be to know people with different background cultures. Uh, sorry for the tangent…
Thanks, y’all.
We’re all about diversity, and schools here have everyone under the sun. This year (probably related to going to a bigger school + older kids), my eldest has become more sensitive to issues of race, name calling, etc.
I’m sure the camp (that I saw) is just fine, but I don’t think we’ll be sending the kids there.
