What NOT to eat

I received a link to this article by Ediets called “7 Foods to Never Eat.” I thought it made a lot of sense. I also thought – dayum, I could sure use some chicken fingers right now.

So I had lunch at a chicken finger place (but didn’t inhale) and told my wife about this article, but for the life of me I couldn’t remember what #1 was. I don’t know if they are in any kind of order, but let’s just pretend, okay?

#1 Food you should never eat: Doughnuts. And they spelled it wrong (I only eat donuts, for the record).

Number 2 through 7 below the fold…

2. Cheeseburger with fries
3. Fried Chicken and Chicken Nuggets
4. Oscar Mayer’s Lunchables
5. Sugary Cereal
6. Processed Meats
7. Canned soup

If you wanna read the reasons, you have to click over to the article, sorry…

Can y’all think of any more?

  1. Oh thank you for commenting on my site!!!! I was too lazy to update my blogroll and then you exploded your old blog and I lost you!!!!!!

    I promise to update now!!!!

  2. Canned Soup?!!?! I can’t imagine that could be on there with donuts.

I’ll have to go read the article.

I think my family eats pretty dang healthy but I would hate to admit how many times my children eat chicken nuggets a month!

  3. I’m thinkin’ the pecan pie I had tonight with the “whipped food topping” should be on the list too! 🙁

But common – I’m in a small Georgia town for the next 4 days population of 14,000+/- … how many healthy places do you think there are to eat?!

  4. wha? no lumps of sugar and fat deep-fried in more fat and slathered with sugar? those would jeopardize a diet? who knew?

Umm, my youngest regularly eats 2,3,4 and 6. And he’s in the 90th percentile for height and 25th for weight. But he’ll probably have a heart attack at 11.

My Elder Child won’t eat fries after he watched SuperSize me, but he is a deli meat freak. I can say without a doubt that we don’t keep sugar cereal in the house. Except for my Frosted Flakes, that I hide and eat dry from a cup when I need a sweet crunchy snack. But one box can last me six months.

  5. I’m screwed and so is my family because we eat all of that. Well, I dont eat canned soup but my daughter does. You know what though I’d rather go to heaven in a slighly round and a little unhealthy body than a super thin and totally healthy body.

  6. You know, I am a food fanatic about eating healthy. Many of those things are available in ways that they aren’t unhealthy. Yes, they cost more, but sometimes it’s worth it.

Even *I* found hotdogs I could eat – and I eat only organic poultry – rarely beef and NO pork.

If a hotdog can be saved, so can everything else… except maybe the donuts. But’s what’s life without a little sugar from time to time.

  7. After my Krispy Kreme binge last summer (and resulting 5-10 pounds), I can’t stand doughnuts.

Aren’t they saying now that processed meats with nitrates cause some kind of cancer? I’m waiting for them to say that water causes cancer. (Although I guess in some polluted systems, it could…)

If I didn’t have #5, my kids wouldn’t eat breakfast. hehe

I think the canned soup is on there because of the high sodium. One type I used to like until I saw the sodium content had 97% of the recommended daily sodium intake.

  8. Not to pee in the Cheerios (so to speak) but I really hated that article. The basic genus is there, but for the sake of brevity, they really give some half-hearted and half-assed advise on several items.

    1. Donuts – Well duh… no kidding, if you are eating a donut, despite what you may think, you are not on a diet anyway.

    2. Cheeseburger and Fries. Well this one is mostly true, but they SAY cheeseburger, but list quantities for the GIANT items like the Big Mac and Whopper with tons of extra gunk on them. In general it is of course good to stay away from Fast Food Restaurants. But a Cheeseburger made at home on the bar-b-que is no where near as bad as they list here.

    3. Fried Chicken and Chicken Nuggets – Again, they could have covered this under “Do not eat fast food restaurant food” Fried Chicken at home, done with Canola or Olive Oil is far better than what they list here. Also Chicken Nuggets from the Supermarket, not fried (and most are now Trans Fat Free as well) can be just as healthy as any other prepared dinner.

    4. Lunchables – Yeah, it is overprocessed, it is hard to argue with this one. BUT, if a parent is only going to pack a baloney sandwich on WHITE bread with a little bag of cookies, then that “homemade” lunch is just as bad (if not worse) than the Lunchables, expecially since the Lunchables is portioned.

    5. Sugary Cereal – Watch out for this joke of a suggestion. My daughter like Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal. My wife, in trying to help me get healthy bought Kellogs Smart Start Cereal. Care to guess which one had more SUGAR in it? Read the labels. Like everything else in this world, “sugary” cereals are not all the same. (Nor apparently are products that are marketed as “healthy”)

    6. Processed Meat – Yeah they got this one right.

    7. Canned Soup. – Again too overly broad. Sure, there are plenty of soups out there just as they describe. But there is an equal number of “smart” choices to be had as well. Read the labels.

    Some things to add:

White Bread – Wonder White Bread is the devils when it comes to trying to lose weight. It is a useless collection of carbs with a high glycemic index (digest it quickly, makes lots of insulin). Get some whole grain breads and toss out the white.

Canned or Jarred Fruit – Not neccessarily ALL, but any ones packed in Syrup are useless from a nutrition standpoint, and even if you “rinse off” the syrup, the sugar has already invaded your fruit making it a fruit tasting sugar bomb.

Milk containing rBGH – Milk from cows that have been given this growth hormone causes the milk to raise IGF-1 (Insulin Growth Factor 1) levels in those that consume it. There are no benefits to this fact. Go organic or at least go with a brand that states that their cows are not given rBGH (or rBST) or is “hormone free”

  9. Canned Soup? I just don’t get that one…it doesn’t make sense to me. The carbs are really low on the chicken noodle soup I eat!

My #1 thing to not eat/have in the house: Dove Promise’s…or anything with DOVE in the title…MMmmmMMMmmGood!!!

But I AM scouring my local area to find a bicycle to go out biking. I HATE (in HATE read: LOATHE) Running (I think it has something to do with my high arches) but I love to bike, so I’m looking for a bike. Of course, this probably won’t help once the snow hits, but by then there’s always shoveling!

  10. I grew up on white bread, luncheon meat and a slice of cheese. That was lunch practically everyday for 12 years and now I eat a steady diet of pizza, burgers, etc. I really want to eat healthy but a lifetime of habit just keeps pulling me down.
Does anyone have experience or advice on breaking out of this rut?
