Is it any wonder it takes me sometimes three or four tries to call one of my kids by the correct name? My brain is full of crap like this.
As I rolled on, the sky grew dark
I put the pedal down, to make some time
There’s somethin’ good, waiting down this road
I’m pickin’ up whatever’s mineRunning down a dream
Never would come to me
Working on a mystery
Going wherever it leads
Runnin’ down a dream
Okay, this song by Mr. Petty is sortof a sleeper. It starts innocently enough, but ends in this blistering guitar solo. (and I can’t help but think of Cammie, from Manicgurl.com, when I think of Tom Petty. And I wonder what she’s up to now)
Anyway, one sunday night when we were out on the highway I picked up one of those radio shows where they talk to the artists about their music. And they were talking to Tom Petty, and so here’s your trivia: He recorded this in his garage. Yup. The whole album, actually, but I remember him talking about this song (Running Down a Dream) in particular. I think that is Mike Campbell on the solo at the end. Tom said they had the vocals down and everything else, and everyone was thinking it was a pretty cool song, and then Mike just let her rip. Tom said jaws hit the floor and they went “cool.”
Of course, this is all on Full Moon Fever, which came out in 89, which might be classic rock to some of my younger readers but I still think of it as two years after I was married…
