Competitive spirit

This morning, or more accurately in the middle of the night, I awoke to find both boys in bed with us. The reason they woke me up is they were both very hot.

I stumbled through the dark, found the thermometer (Spongebob), and took the temp under the arm of first one and then the other. Of course the fuss woke up my wife, too. “Well?” She asked.

“They both have a fever, so I think I’m staying home today.”

My oldest, in a weak voice, warbled “Who was higher?

Fathers Day

Fathers Day is in progress here (no “mission accomplished” banner) and so far we have:

1) slept in till almost 8:00

2) had breakfast at a local diner that I love; pecan belgian waffles for me, pancakes for my bride, ham and cheese omelette for my oldest son who usually won’t eat, lots of coffee

3) went to Sam’s Club. I don’t want to know how much it was. It surely wasn’t under $100. Did you know you can buy a 30 pack of applesauce? (two flavors).

4) cooked lunch on the grill; brats and chicken. Made potato salad and bbq beans to go with it, washed down with beer. My middle son ate nothing but pickle relish (but he at least put it on a plate and used a fork)

5) played “Shrek 2” on Playstation, after I failed one point my six year old took the controls and passed the same checkpoint easily. Quote: “I’m gooder than you.”

6) Mom and middle kid taking a nap, baby is helping me type (thanks for the backspace key!), a dog ate a $70 pair of shoes while we were at Sam’s and I just found it.

HFD, everyone (even if you aren’t a dad, I hope you’re having a good day). I’m off to find a football (soccer) game to watch.

Just in case

Perhaps I should clarify what I wrote here about me and my kids.

I love my kids madly. Period. I apparently still have issues about not being able to create my own, and that’s something I’ll be dealing with for a while. That is separate from my kids, though. Crap, this is hard to put into words (and I’m a masochist for trying, I think). I don’t feel like I’ve “settled” or anything, in a perfect world I’d have it all (procreat and adopt), but that ain’t gonna happen. I am blessed to have my children in my life. I can’t imagine loving them more.

It is still a little odd around holidays to think of their birth families, though, and the letters I’ve received reflect some of that, mostly from the other side, as the child that was adopted who still has feeling about birth mom/dad. Perhaps that’s what I was trying to put into words yesterday.
