This is a big map (so it’s only a link) but it gives a good idea of where the Navy thinks the storm will go.
At the time I’m posting this, they are predicting it will make landfall west / south of Galveston Houston. But that puts Galveston-Houston in the dreaded “right front quadrant” where waves and wind are going to be worse.
Most of the coast isn’t much above sea level – a matter of a few feet. So heavy rain will flood things, at least temporarily. We’ve seen our share of storms, and they can cause heavy damage, mostly in terms of lost trees, roofs, power lines, and signs. It’s been a while since we’ve had a “big one” – and at this point I’m not convinced that Rita is it. But it’s useful to know that water temps on the Texas coast are very, very high, and the water is shallow, which are perfect for making a storm gain strength just before it hits shore.
