Just to get it out of the way, yes, the title of this post was stolen from Jimmy Buffett. I don’t know if he took it from someone else. Whatever.

This has been on my mind recently and of course the only way to deal with something that is on my mind is to write it down so I can promptly forget it again.

So whatever thrills you
Anything you love to do
Just say someday I will

Don’t need to know who
May help you make it come true
Just say someday I will

You probably have figured out by reading here (or by knowing me in person) that I’m somewhat of a homebody. Boring. I don’t go anywhere or step outside my comfort zone, not without years of research or plenty of alcohol. Sometimes both. I’m not the guy to burst into the party popping a champagne cork, more like the red shirt guy that they always talk about in the past tense on Star Trek, as in “Er, one less to beam up, whatshisname isn’t coming back.”

I don’t want to make excuses or anything like that, to quote that other great Sailing Philosopher, “I yam what I yam.”

Lately, for some reason, I have this urge to do something. Maybe it started when I saw a concert last fall with an old high school friend I hadn’t seen in years. Maybe it is the support that has poured in from bloggers and friends from afar when the shit hits the fan here and I post one of my whiny entries about the suckitude, and keeps pouring in even now.

I think it would be really cool to travel and actually meet people whom I only know from their blogs or emails or phone calls. I can easily come up with a couple dozen people from here or FB that I would love to see in person. They are all over the world, so of course it wouldn’t be practical nor easy, but that’s the feeling I have – “wouldn’t it be nice.”

Just writing these thoughts down instantly kicks off my defense mechanisms, of course. In the two hours I’ve been tinkering with this entry I’ve already made a mental list of at least 20 reasons why it would never work out, why I wouldn’t have the guts to stick my neck out and try and do this, would never even make it out the door. But you know? I’m going to hit publish anyway. It’ll give me something to look at years from now and go ‘hey, remember when I thought about actually meeting people? WTF?’

Or maybe, just maybe, I’ll look back and see this as a turning point.

He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. ~Friedrich Nietzsche

Yes, our big trip is upon us. This is rare for us, partly because of the expense, but more because travelling with our clan is never, ever easy.

The kids don’t adjust to sleeping in a strange place very well. The dad (that would be me) doesn’t handle stress very well. The mom has to keep all of us focused and do all the packing, planning, and a million other things so that we can pull it off.

Our niece is getting married, and we’ll get to see some family that we see every few years (if that often). Assuming we can properly make it past airport security and no weather delays, by tomorrow night we’ll be in Virginia. Which I’m sure is lovely, but the report I’m looking at says it is colder than a witch’s tit right now. But that’s ok, we’re staying at a nice place with an indoor pool. Yes, we are nuts and are hoping to swim in January.

And that’s the wonderful thing about family travel: it provides you with experiences that will remain locked forever in the scar tissue of your mind. ~Dave Barry

We will be packing video games for the kids, but probably not a laptop (don’t need the extra worry, see a couple paragraphs up). I may look and see if there’s a Business Center or whatnot and check online, but probably not. (makes note: bring a camera)

I’m sure there will be stories, hopefully of the mundane kind about how we can walk through airports and the rental car people gave us a free upgrade to a Ferrari that seats five (that’s my son’s hope, at least).

See you soon!

I did the stability ball routine again last night. Less sore than I was the first time. Yay.

Our family is flying to a wedding next week. We’ll get to see some relatives that we don’t get to see very often, due to eddys in the space time continuum.

The sun is shining, again, for a couple days. Next cold front just in time for the weekend (‘natch).

Also, holy shit, our family is flying to a wedding next week!

I’m trying to keep things in perspective. If Ted Nugent can make it to sixty, maybe I can, too.

Usually, by now I have some kind of must see movie for the summer. But I cannot think of one. Sure, there’s “Race to Witch Mountain,” which I’ll probably watch with the kids (I was their age when the first one came out, probably why I like aliens and blondes still). May has Star Trek and Terminator Salvation. This summer has another Transformer movie and 2012 (and who doesn’t love a movie about the world ending?) We have to wait until practically Christmas for the new Chipmunks flick.

Anything you wanna see?

This is kinda cool:

Map of the United States showing where I've visited
visited 28 states (56%)
Create your own visited map of The United States or determine the next president

Link from Blah Blah

Please note: most of these states I visited before starting high school, and then I had a few trips East. Some states (hello, Nebraska!) I barely touched during a road trip, in that case to go to Iowa for a wedding.
