Who’s on Third?

One thing that always takes me back… the Who.

When my wife and I were dating, I had a car with a casette deck. (some of you may have to go ask your parents what that is. It’s okay, we’ll wait.) It had a feature where when it reached the end of the tape it would automatically switch to the other side (called “autoreverse,” and it wasn’t on every tape deck - you had to look for it. Yes, I’m a fucking dinosaur. At least I didn’t have the 8 track anymore by the time this takes place)

Anyway. I had a car, which is pertinant to this story, and in the car was a tape deck, and in the tape deck was a copy of Hooligans, which could play for hours (thanks to the autoreverse and a Sears Die Hard) and to this day just about any time I hear a song by the Who (5:15 just came on the radio, I’m out of my brain on the train) I can remember the orgasmic fun we had in that car, hiding out near the water tower.

Back when we could actually do gymnastics in a Datsun.

Not that I’m old now or anything…

(thanks to Michael for the photo, and thanks to the Who for reminding me of high school)

nuts

I’m tired of seeing my own writing at the top of the blog, so here’s something else to get tired of soon.

I’ve added a list of the last five songs I’ve listened to on last.fm down on the sidebar (waaay down, right now).

Is Gmail ever going to come out of Beta?

Remember when people would buy Gmail invites on ebay? I’ve got 100 right now. In each of five or six accounts. Anybody want one? (note: the answer is: WTF? You can just sign up on the web site, so why bother counting invites?)

We’re Not Gonna Take It is on the radio, and I remember as a kid thinking the “see me, feel me” part was all about sex. Now that I’m older? It sounds like a congressional campaign ad.

(you’re welcome)

Momma’s gotta squeezebox

While of course, this song did not come out when we were first dating, for some reason it keeps popping into my head.

Cuz they’re playing all night
and the music’s allll right
mama’s got a squeezebox
daddy never sleeps at night

The Who Tour Dates: The Who unveils North American tour plans; liveDaily
“Pete and I are really excited to be returning to the US with some brand new music to play,” Daltrey added. “We’ll also be digging out some rarities that we’ve not played for a long time. We’re looking forward to reconnecting with our American fans and hopefully seeing some new ones coming along too.”

Some of our younger readers may remember The Who from the Hummer commercials, or perhaps remember the stink (at least around here) when Clearchannel took out “who the fuck are you” and “who the hell are you” and just shortened the song altogether.

Ah, yes, memories.

Even I’m not that old (I heard you snickering, over there on the side) and I saw them live, back before band members started dying off.   I also remember parking with my now-wife, having just about worn out a couple of Who tapes while we had wild monkey sex in the back of my Datsun.  Okay, you can snicker this time, we were both a lot smaller back then.  And apparently more flexible.

Of course, I won’t be able to see them (can’t afford $100 concert tickets right now, no matter Who is coming)
