Having a moment

The other day we’re singing in church, a song that we don’t sing very often but I used to back when I was a kid, and for a minute I had the calmest feeling come over me.

And as I’m writing this I’m tempted to write something like “intensely calm” because it was that much of a departure from the way I normally am.

And then I started overthinking it and wondering “I wonder if this is what it’s like for other people? Is this is how church is supposed to make you feel?”

And then it was gone, and I was back to normal, whatever that is. My usual self, full of doubts and worries and fears and horrible black oily stuff that – oh, wait, no, that was on a movie I saw. Anyway, my usual self.

The self that I pretty much hate. But I’m thinking maybe if I keep going to church for another 40 years, I’ll get a moment like that again.

We’ll see.

We’re walking out of Sunday school today, and the clock tower is chiming (11:00 AM)

Son: “Hey, church is coming on again!”

He: “The Mass is ended, go in peace…”

Me: “Thanks be to GOD!

Oh, sorry, was I shouting?

There were two preachers who would meet each other whilst riding to their particular churches. They both enjoyed riding bicycles and talking. Then one day, one of the preachers was walking.

“What happened to your bike?”

“Can you believe that someone from my own church stole it?!”

“NO!” Then an idea struck him, “I have an idea how to get your bike back … Sunday give a very serious talk on the Ten Commandments, and when you get to the part about ‘Thou
shall not steal’, look around and see who looks guilty.”

The next Monday the preacher comes riding along on his bike.

“Well, I see my suggestion worked.”

“Sort of… I was giving my talk about the Ten Commandments, and when I got to ‘Adultery’ I remembered where I left my bike!”
