her is probably the best movie I have seen in years. And I think Spike named it that way just because he knew what convoluted sentences would be written about this phenomenal movie.
It was so fantastic that I couldn’t even write about it until I reflected on it for a couple of days.
The movie asks many questions, the answers will depend on who is watching. It is beautifully made, the soundtrack is perfect, the acting absolutely top notch. Joaquin fucking kills it as Theodore.
Is this a movie for everyone? Nope. There are a couple of scenes which would make some people extremely uncomfortable. If you’re thinking about taking the kids, know that there is explicit simulated sex (phone sex?) I don’t think that’s a big spoiler, it is an R-rated movie for a reason. The questions it raises about relationships and reality may be hard to see, too. Everyone brings their own experience to something like this.
This film explores just what makes a relationship special, what does it mean to love another, how do we deal with the technological changes that infiltrate our lives. it’s a love story, but certainly not a traditional romantic comedy. What is love? Why do we fall in love with someone? Do we focus only on some parts of a relationship so we don’t have to deal with what we don’t like? What makes a being even capable of emotions, of love? What happens when two people have a strong bond and then one or both of them change? How do we live when everyone can retreat into a private world known only to themselves and their computer (and probably the NSA)?
Okay, they don’t mention the NSA in the movie, that bit was mine. You know they aren’t going away. I don’t want to re-tell the movie (you have google for that). My mind is buzzing with ifs ands or buts.
This is, to me, an absolutely brilliant film. I fucking loved it (in case you couldn’t tell).
edit: Spike won Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes. Awesome! I can’t speak of the other films that were nominated, I haven’t seen them, but as I said, this film was incredible, I’m glad it won.
